Eric Huffman to Speak at WCA’s Fifth Global Gathering, Go Global!

The Wesleyan Covenant Association is pleased to announce that the Rev. Eric Huffman, the lead pastor at The Story Church in Houston, Texas, will make a presentation at its Fifth Global Gathering – Go Global! – at Frazer Church in Montgomery, Alabama, on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

“I think Eric is one of the most innovative pastors in the UM Church today,” said the Rev. Keith Boyette, President of the WCA. “The combination of his keen intellect and his passion for the doubters, the skeptics, and even the downright cynical enables him to meet people where they are with a winsome presentation of the Gospel that reaches their heads and hearts.”

At the Global Gathering, Huffman will deliver an address entitled, “Conflict: the Council at Jerusalem,” exploring the inevitable disagreements that crop among committed Christ followers.

Although he is a fourth generation United Methodist pastor, Huffman acknowledges that for a time in his life he described himself as an atheist or agnostic. During a trip to the Holy Land he said, “I was faced with history’s most consequential question: Was Jesus just a man, or is he truly God? After a considerable amount of reflection, I came to the uncomfortable and shocking conclusion that Jesus is who he and his followers said he was: Emmanuel, God with us.”

Since then, Huffman has dedicated his ministry to taking the questions of doubters and skeptics seriously, meeting them where they are and inviting them to be open enough to “doubt their doubts” that Jesus is Lord.

“The Story is perhaps the most exciting new church start in the Texas Annual Conference, and it’s encouraging to see the kind of people Eric and his team are reaching in Houston,” said the Rev. Rob Renfroe, president of Good News Magazine and lead pastor at The Woodlands United Methodist Church’s Loft Campus in The Woodlands, Texas. “Eric’s passion is to lead new generations to ask their questions, to doubt their doubts, and to know the truth of God through Jesus Christ.”

In addition to serving as the lead pastor of a two campus church, Huffman is widely known for his Maybe God Podcast, his devotional book 40 Days of Doubt, and his most recent work, Scripture and the Skeptic. He received his undergraduate degree in religious studies from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, and his Master of Divinity degree from St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri.

Eric is married to Geovanna Huffman who is the executive pastor at The Story Church. They live in Houston, Texas.
