Response to Hurricane Harvey Disaster

Hurricane Harvey has left heart-breaking loss of life and property in its path, and continued disruption for people living along the western side of the Gulf of Mexico. The Wesleyan Covenant Association (WCA) has joined in the prayers offered up by many as we have sought God’s provision, protection and wisdom for those who have been impacted by this disaster.

Although The Woodlands, TX. received over 40 inches of rain, The Woodlands United Methodist Church remains committed to hosting the 2017 Global Gathering of the Wesleyan Covenant Association. We will meet as planned on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at The Woodlands United Methodist Church, 2200 Lake Woodlands Dr., The Woodlands, TX 77380. In addition, the event will be simulcast to more than 50 sites located throughout the United States. Please plan to join us in The Woodlands, Texas, or make arrangements to attend a simulcast site.

Until then, here is how you can make a difference in responding to the devastation of Hurricane Harvey and how you can participate in the 2017 WCA Global Gathering: “Move – On Mission With God.”

Hurricane Harvey Disaster Response

Many areas in and around Houston and neighboring regions of Texas experienced horrific flooding. News reports today indicate that rescue operations are transitioning to recovery and disaster response across the impacted area.

The Woodlands United Methodist Church, the live venue for the 2017 WCA Global Gathering, has been asked by the government to serve as an official distribution center, providing needed items to both shelters, and individuals and families during the coming days, weeks and months of recovery. The WCA urges you to partner with The Woodlands UMC in responding to this immediate need. You can best do this by making a monetary donation to the Disaster Relief Fund at The Woodlands UMC. Instructions for doing so are provided below.

In addition to continuing to be fervent and persistent in prayer, the Wesleyan Covenant Association urges you to be the hands and feet of Jesus by making financial contributions as follows as we respond to this natural disaster:

  • Participate in disaster relief efforts throughout the region by donating to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (“UMCOR”), Disaster Response, United States (#901670). You can make check payable to Advance GCFA with the Advance number placed on the memo line and mailing it to Advance GCFA, PO Box 9068 GPO, New York, NY 10087-9068, donate by phone at 888-252-6174, or make a gift online by clicking here.
  • Participate in assisting The Woodlands United Methodist Church to meet the immediate needs of those in shelters and who have been displaced from their homes in the immediate Houston area by donating as a “Guest” from the “online donation form” accessed at the bottom of the page reached by clicking here, or making your check payable to TWUMC with the notation “Disaster Relief” on the memo line and mailing it to 2200 Lake Woodlands Dr., The Woodlands, TX. 77380.

In addition, the Wesleyan Covenant Association will receive a designated offering at the live venue and at each of the more than 50 simulcast sites for the 2017 Global Gathering specifically for Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief. We urge those who will attend the 2017 Global Gathering to come prepared to give generously as God would lead you.

The 2017 WCA Global Gathering Will Occur As Planned

By the grace of God, the physical plant of The Woodlands United Methodist Church was unharmed by Hurricane Harvey and the church is fully prepared to provide all that is needed to host the 2017 WCA Global Gathering.

In addition, the hotels set aside by the WCA as a block with special pricing for those who will attend the live venue were likewise unharmed by Hurricane Harvey and are fully prepared to provide lodging to those who would want to take advantage of their accommodations. You may view a list of these hotels by clicking here. Please note that the special pricing that has been arranged lasts only until the end of September.

Our presence in the region will be a great blessing to its economy and a source of encouragement to the people in the greater Houston metropolitan area.

We now have 53 venues that will simulcast the 2017 Global Gathering in communities spread across the United States. To view a complete list of these sites organized by annual conference click here.

You may register to attend at either the live venue at The Woodlands United Methodist Church or at one of the simulcast sites by clicking here.

Join us at the 2017 WCA Global Gathering as we experience powerful worship, inspiring preaching and passionate messages, seek the face of God and surrender to the movement of the Holy Spirit.

The Wesleyan Covenant Association is committed to igniting a new movement of God among the people called Methodist. We know things are changing in The United Methodist Church. The shape of the future is uncertain. It is imperative we prepare now to respond for whatever comes next. For our part, we want to commit once again to being an apostolic movement advancing the Kingdom of God globally.

We hope you will join with us. Let’s get moving with God! See you on October 14.
