Bishop Mark Webb to Celebrate Holy Communion at the WCA’s Sixth Global Gathering

Bishop Mark Webb, the Upper New York Episcopal Area

The Wesleyan Covenant Association is pleased to announce that Bishop Mark Webb, leader of the Upper New York Episcopal Area, will offer a closing meditation and celebrate Holy Communion at its Sixth Global Gathering – More Than Conquerors – in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

“Bishop Webb exemplifies what clergy and laity are looking for in a bishop: a faithful disciple of Christ, a leader dedicated to protecting and challenging Christ’s church, and a practical theologian committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ.” said the Rev. Keith Boyette, WCA President. “The WCA counts it a great honor and privilege to have Bishop Webb lead us in the celebration of Holy Communion as we bring our Sixth Global Gathering to a close.”

Elected to the episcopal office in 2012, Bishop Webb has led the Upper New York Area for nearly ten years. With more than 134,000 members, the episcopal area includes 865 local churches and 85 new faith communities in 12 districts, covering 48,000 square miles in 49 of the 62 counties in New York state.

Before his elevation to the episcopacy, Webb served pastorates at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania), St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (Wormleysburg, Pennsylvania), and Linglestown United Methodist Church (Linglestown, Pennsylvania). At the time of his election as a bishop, he was serving as the District Superintendent of the York District in the Susquehanna Annual Conference.

Webb received the Harry Denman Evangelism Award in 2002. He was a delegate to General and Jurisdictional Conferences in 2004, 2008, and 2012. He currently serves the general church as the President of Discipleship Ministries Board of Directors and as a member of the Connectional Table. He also serves as the secretary of the Northeastern Jurisdiction College of Bishops and as a Trustee of United Theological Seminary. In 2018 he was named as one of the top 100 leaders by the John C. Maxwell Transformational Leadership Award.

“Bishop Webb is one of the most humble, gracious, compassionate and faithful leaders in the UM Church today,” said the Rev. Dr. Carolyn Moore, Chairwoman of the WCA’s Global Council and Lead Pastor at Mosaic Church in Evans, Georgia. “Quiet-spoken, but firm in his convictions, Bishop Webb remains a steady, sure presence even amidst the turmoil and transitions in the denomination. We are very thankful for him.”

Bishop Webb is a native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and is married to Jodi. They have two sons, Tyler (who is married to Lyndsay) and Benjamin.

The Sixth Global Gathering will be held at Kingsway Christian Church with seating for 1,260 people. People wanting to attend the gathering at the host site can still register for seating.
