Let the Redeemed of the Lord Say So

May 27, 2022

“When I was young, I did not know what my elders meant when they said, ‘Say so,’” explained the Rev. Angela Pleasants as she recalled the interchange between preacher and people at the “Methocostal” church of her childhood. “But when I was older, I understood what [they] meant when they said, ‘Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.’ These saints came through the tribulation of segregation, discrimination, hatred, and unrest. They fought long and hard and saw victories along the way.”

Pleasants was addressing over 2,000 people who attended More Than Conquerors, the Wesleyan Covenant Association’s Sixth Global Gathering at Kingsway Christian Church in Avon, Indiana, on Saturday, May 7, 2022.

Taking Psalm 107 as her Scripture text, Pleasants drew upon the connections her elders made between the long and difficult deliverance of the Israelites and the long and painful deliverance of African Americans from slavery, persecution, and discrimination, and then the deliverance from the bondage of sin and death we all long for.

“We are saved, delivered and restored in our relationship with God, we are grateful people, living a life of thanksgiving,” proclaimed Pleasants near the end of her stirring address. “We have not just survived. We have thrived and conquered. We are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ who first loved us and continues to shower us with His love.”
